SOUND DOCTRINE FOUNDATION - FOUNDER

John S. Winston, Sr. was a member of the Church of Christ 83 years (1918-2001). His membership was in the congregation established by his Grandfather Turner Mitchell, shortly after slavery in Plummersville, Arkansas.

Early in his ministry, he was adopted by Bro. G.P. Bowser as his son in the Gospel. Bro. Bowser encouraged and inspired him in his ministry. His Christian commitment and encouragement of Bro. Bowser, led to 71 years of establishing, nurturing and counseling congregations throughout the United States. A vital concern of his ministry has been the perpetuation of SOUND DOCTRINAL teaching in the Lord's Church.

In 1932, Bro. G.P. Bowser, brought together, along with Bro. Winston, Bros. R.N. Hogan, Levi Kennedy and G.E. Steward. This association was bonded by commitment to an active role in establishing a school to provide training in spiritual values based on Sound Doctrine teaching. The result was Bowser Christian Institute, followed by Southern Bible Institute, followed by Southwestern Christian College, Terrell, Texas.

SOUND DOCTRINE PROGRAM

For fifty-two years Bro. Winston's Teaching and Training Program, was and is an important work of his ministry. This program was especially designed to encourage young men, to become teachers, preachers, elders ,and deacons. Young women who attend this class were encouraged to be teachers, and to understand the role of being wives of ministers, elders, and deacons. There are a number of former members of the program serving successfully in the ministry today.

In continuing pursuit of Sound Doctrine Teaching, Bro. J.S. Winston founded the J.S.Winston Foundation in 1982. Its purpose is to give assistance to young Ministers and their wives who are majoring in Bible and Religious Education in the pursuit of a Bachelor Degree at Southwestern Christian College. It also proposes to give financial support to Southwestern Christian College.
